In the 16th century in the Cévennes region of France, Michael Kohlhaas, a successful horse dealer, lives happily with his wife and children. One day, he travels to a nearby town to sell his horses but is stopped by a local baron named Huguenin de Gué. The baron demands an exorbitant toll fee for passage and seizes two of Kohlhaas' finest horses when he refuses to pay.

Enraged by the injustice and the humiliation he faced, Kohlhaas seeks legal redress but finds himself obstructed at every turn by a corrupt and indifferent legal system. Devastated and desperate for justice, he takes matters into his own hands and forms a small band of followers to seek revenge against the baron and his accomplices.

As Kohlhaas gathers more followers, their rebellion grows and they become a significant threat to the ruling class. Kohlhaas' actions escalate drastically, and he starts pillaging towns, burning down castles, and capturing important figures. Despite his violent methods, Kohlhaas remains devoted to his cause - obtaining restitution for the horses and punishing those responsible for the initial injustice.

His rebellion catches the attention of the higher authorities, and the King sends a representative, the Governor of Poitiers, to negotiate a resolution. Kohlhaas agrees to a truce and demands a fair trial against the baron. However, the Governor betrays Kohlhaas and arrests him under false pretenses, aiming to execute him for his crimes instead of granting him justice.

As Kohlhaas awaits his inevitable execution, his loyal wife, Judith, pleads with the Queen to intervene. Eventually, Queen Marie of France commutes Kohlhaas' death sentence and orders a retrial. The court finds the baron guilty, and he is sentenced to be hanged. Although satisfied by this outcome, Kohlhaas realizes that his deeds have consumed him and destroyed his family.

In the end, Kohlhaas is left alone, feeling lost and broken. He chooses to move on, leaving the Cévennes behind, reflecting on his actions and the consequences they brought about. The legend of Michael Kohlhaas lives on as a symbol of rebellion against injustice and a testament to the lengths individuals can go for righteousness.
