In the movie "Little Man Tate," Dede (played by Jodie Foster) is a working-class single mother raising her son, Fred Tate (played by Adam Hann-Byrd). At a young age, it becomes evident that Fred possesses an extraordinary level of intelligence. He is a child prodigy, excelling in mathematics and showing an exceptional ability to absorb and process complex information.

Dede, alongside her close friend and neighbor, Jane Grierson (played by Dianne Wiest), wants to provide Fred with the best possible opportunities to nurture his intellect. However, she struggles to balance safeguarding his childhood and allowing him to explore his potential fully.

When a psychologist named Jane Grierson recognizes Fred's exceptional intellectual abilities, she offers him a scholarship to a prestigious school for gifted children called the "Odgen St. School." Initially hesitant, Dede eventually agrees to enroll Fred, hoping it will provide him with the challenges he needs intellectually but also fearing that it may rob him of his childhood experiences.

Once enrolled in Odgen St. School, Fred feels alienated from his peers, struggling to relate to them due to both their age differences and his intellectual capabilities. He finds solace in the company of his mother and Jane, who continue to support and guide him.

As Fred embraces his unique mind and its capabilities, tensions arise between Dede and Jane. Dede is worried that Fred may be losing his childhood innocence too quickly and wants to protect him from the pressures that come with being a child prodigy. On the other hand, Jane believes that Fred's talents should be nurtured vigorously, even if it means sacrificing some aspects of his childhood.

During a large academic competition, Fred's immense pressure to succeed takes a toll on him. Feeling overwhelmed and isolated, he starts to question his place in the world and the sacrifices made for his education. Dede recognizes her son's unhappiness and realizes that she must find a balance between supporting his potential and ensuring his emotional well-being.

In a poignant final scene, Dede decides to withdraw Fred from the school, understanding that his happiness and emotional development are more important than achieving academic recognition. She wants Fred to have a normal childhood, surrounded by love and support, even if it means limiting his exposure to certain intellectual opportunities.

"Little Man Tate" explores the challenges faced by a single mother trying to raise a gifted child and tackle the complexities of intellect, emotions, and childhood. It depicts the efforts of a mother who desires the best for her son while also safeguarding his happiness and emotional growth in a world that often values intellect over everything else.
