In the movie Breakthrough, based on a true story, John Smith (played by Marcel Ruiz) is a typical, sports-loving 14-year-old boy living in a small town. One winter day, John and his friends decide to venture out onto the frozen Lake St. Louis, unaware of the danger that lies beneath the icy surface. The ice gives way, and John falls through, plunging into the frigid waters.

Despite the desperate efforts of the rescue team and emergency responders, John remains unconscious for an extended period of time. After nearly 27 minutes of failed attempts at resuscitation, all hope seems lost. However, John's mother, Joyce Smith (played by Chrissy Metz), arrives at the hospital and refuses to accept her son's condition as final. Overwhelmed with heartbreaking despair, she fervently prays for a miracle.

Miraculously, Joyce's prayers are answered, and John's pulse suddenly returns. The medical team is astonished as John defies all odds and starts showing signs of recovery. While his physical condition gradually improves, he still faces severe challenges, including the possibility of suffering long-term brain damage.

As John continues his fight for survival, the small community bands together, offering unwavering support and faith. Joyce becomes a pillar of strength and determination, rallying the town's residents to join her in praying for John's full recovery. This unprecedented show of faith and unity becomes a profound testimony to the power of love and the importance of hope even in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds.

Breakthrough is an emotional and inspiring story that explores the immense strength of a mother's love and the remarkable resilience of the human spirit. It narrates the journey of a family, a community, and a young boy whose life hangs in the balance, as they find hope and healing in the face of an extraordinary and life-altering event.
