In Major Dundee, set in 1864, Major Amos Dundee (portrayed by Charlton Heston) is a Union cavalry officer stationed in the Southwest United States during the Civil War. After his defeat at the Battle of Gettysburg, Dundee is demoted to commanding a prisoner-of-war camp in New Mexico.

As he becomes aware of the escalating Apache raids on nearby U.S. bases in Texas, Dundee becomes determined to take action against the Native American tribe. He convinces his superior, Colonel Tyreen (played by Richard Harris), to allow him to lead an expedition into Mexico to track down the Apache raiders.

Dundee assembles a diverse group of troops to join his mission. Alongside his own cavalrymen, he also recruits Confederate prisoners of war, knowing that they possess knowledge of the local terrain. This decision causes tension among his men, who are divided by both their loyalties to the Union and the Confederacy.

As the expedition begins, Dundee's troop ventures deep into Mexico's hostile territory while facing numerous challenges and obstacles. On their journey, they encounter various dangers, including attacks from the Apache tribe and confrontations with French forces stationed in Mexico during the French intervention.

During the expedition, Dundee forms a complex relationship with a Mexican village woman named Teresa (played by Senta Berger), who serves as a liaison between his troops and the local Mexican population. Additionally, there is a subplot involving an Apache warrior named Sierra Charriba, who becomes a personal nemesis for Dundee.

As the troop pushes deeper into enemy territory, they engage in violent skirmishes and battles with the Apache raiders. The conflict takes its toll on Dundee's men, with casualties increasing and morale diminishing. The harsh conditions and varying loyalties within the troop lead to internal conflicts and strained relationships.

Eventually, Dundee's actions catch up to him, as he defies orders from Colonel Tyreen and continues to pursue the Apache band, even after their initial objectives have been achieved. This causes a rift between Dundee and his superior, escalating the tension and endangering the expedition.

In the climactic finale, Dundee's troop engages in a decisive battle against the Apache warriors, resulting in significant casualties on both sides. The remaining survivors, including Dundee and some of his men, make a narrow escape back to U.S. territory.

Major Dundee is a story of personal redemption, sacrifice, and the consequences of war. It explores the complexities of loyalty, the blurred lines between right and wrong, and the unforgiving nature of the American Southwest during a tumultuous historical period.
