"A Mighty Wind" revolves around three fictional folk music acts: The Folksmen, the New Main Street Singers, and Mitch & Mickey. The film sets out to explore the lives and relationships of these characters as they come together for a memorial concert in honor of their late manager, Irving Steinbloom.

The Folksmen, comprised of Mark Shubb (played by Harry Shearer), Jerry Palter (played by Michael McKean), and Alan Barrows (played by Christopher Guest), were a popular folk group in the 1960s. Although they never achieved superstardom like Bob Dylan or Joni Mitchell, they played an integral role in the folk music scene of the time.

The New Main Street Singers, on the other hand, are a more commercialized version of folk music. Led by Terry and Laurie Bohner (played by John Michael Higgins and Jane Lynch), this group has evolved into a larger ensemble with a slightly more manufactured sound. The Singers consist of numerous members, all with unique quirks and personalities.

Lastly, Mitch Cohen (played by Eugene Levy) and Mickey Crabbe (played by Catherine O'Hara) were once a romantic duo known as Mitch & Mickey. Their relationship was strained, and they eventually went their separate ways. However, their shared musical talents, particularly Mickey's impressive voice, remain unforgettable. Mickey has since moved on to marriage and children, while Mitch has struggled to find success in any of his solo endeavors.

When Irving Steinbloom passes away, his son Jonathan (played by Bob Balaban) decides to organize a memorial concert to celebrate the folk music era and his father's legacy. He calls upon The Folksmen, the New Main Street Singers, and convinces Mitch and Mickey to reunite for one night only at the prestigious Town Hall venue in New York City. The film follows the various acts as they prepare for the concert.

As the characters rehearse and face personal challenges along the way, old tensions resurface, especially between Mitch and Mickey. Despite the difficulties, they all find moments of growth, rediscover their love for music, and reflect on the impact their careers had on their lives and the folk music scene.

The film concludes with the emotional concert at Town Hall, where the characters showcase their talents and come together to perform nostalgic folk classics. The concert becomes a testament to the enduring power of music and the bond between these quirky, passionate musicians.

"A Mighty Wind" is a comedic and heartwarming exploration of friendship, nostalgia, and the enduring spirit of folk music in the turbulent 1960s.
