In the movie Rio Grande, Lt. Col. Kirby Yorke (played by John Wayne) is stationed in a remote outpost on the Texas frontier, tasked with protecting the settlers from frequent Apache attacks. Yorke's command is facing a severe shortage of troops, putting a significant strain on him and his ability to effectively defend the area.

Adding to the tension, Yorke's estranged son, Trooper Jeff Yorke (played by Claude Jarman Jr.), unexpectedly arrives as one of the 18 new recruits sent to the regiment. The father and son have not seen each other for fifteen years, ever since Yorke's wife left him, taking Jeff with her. Their reunion is initially awkward, with lingering resentment and unresolved emotions.

As the Apache attacks intensify, Yorke faces a series of challenges. He must not only lead his troops against the marauding Apaches but also earn the respect and trust of the newcomers, including his own son. The strained relationship between Yorke and Jeff gradually begins to heal as they endure the hardships and dangers together.

Yorke's ex-wife, Kathleen (played by Maureen O'Hara), also arrives at the outpost, hoping to take Jeff back with her. This further complicates matters for Yorke as he juggles his duty as a soldier with his personal life. The tension between Yorke, Kathleen, and Jeff creates additional turmoil within the regiment.

Amidst the turmoil, Yorke devises a plan to lure the Apache chief, Mangas Coloradas, into a decisive battle. He hopes to end the constant threat to the settlers once and for all. The climax of the film features an intense and perilous battle between Yorke's troopers and the Apache warriors.

Through their shared experiences and the trials they face, Yorke and Jeff gradually rebuild their bond, finding common ground as father and son. Despite the challenges and sacrifices, Yorke's steadfast commitment to his duty and the unity of his regiment ultimately prevail, ensuring the safety of the settlers and reinforcing the importance of family.
