In the movie "The Purge: Anarchy," Leo Barnes is a former police officer who lost his son to a drunk driver. Determined to seek revenge, Leo decides to participate in the annual Purge, a government-sanctioned 12-hour period during which all crimes, including murder, are legal. His plan is to use this opportunity to hunt down and kill the man responsible for his son's death.
However, on the night of the Purge, things do not go as planned for Leo. As he ventures into the streets, he comes across Eva and Cali, a mother and daughter who are trying to survive the chaos after their home is invaded by a group of masked assailants. Realizing that they are in danger, Leo decides to abandon his personal mission and instead becomes their protector, helping Eva and Cali navigate through the dangerous streets.
Along the way, they encounter a couple, Shane and Liz, whose car has broken down just as the Purge commences. With no means of defense, they are easy targets for the various nefarious groups roaming the city. Leo takes them all under his wing and together they form an unlikely alliance, fighting to survive the night.
As the group tries to stay hidden and out of harm's way, they witness the horrors of the Purge unfolding around them. They encounter several other groups and individuals who are either seeking vengeance, indulging in sadistic acts, or simply trying to survive. The city becomes a battlefield, with wealthy elites targeting the poor and vulnerable.
As Leo and his unlikely companions make their way through the chaos, they face numerous challenges, including deadly gangs, corrupt police officers, and even a paramilitary group who hunts people for sport. While desperately searching for a safe place, Leo also starts to question the morality of the Purge and the political motives behind it.
