In the film, Pride, coach Jim Ellis, a former competitive swimmer, finds himself in a tough situation when he arrives at Philadelphia's Simon Gratz High School in the 1970s. The school is struggling with racial tensions, lack of resources, and a generally apathetic attitude towards achieving anything great.

Inspired to make a positive change, Jim approaches the school administration with a proposal to start a swimming team. However, he faces resistance from the staff, who believe that black students are not capable of swimming due to various stereotypes and lack of access to swimming facilities. Determined to prove them wrong, Jim takes matters into his own hands and begins training interested students in a dilapidated, unused pool in the basement of the school.

With the help of a wise and supportive janitor named Elston, Jim forms a bond with the students and teaches them not only swimming techniques but also important life lessons. The team, composed of diverse individuals with their own struggles and challenges, comes together and starts to excel in their training, showcasing their abilities and disproving the prejudices held against them.

As the team gains recognition for their talent, they face various obstacles along the way. They confront racism and discrimination from rival teams, coaches, and even some members of their own community who perceive swimming as a "white" sport. Despite these setbacks, the team remains undeterred and pushes forward, driven by their desire to prove themselves and create a legacy for future generations.

Pride depicts the students' journey as they challenge societal expectations, break down barriers, and transform themselves into a formidable swimming team. The film highlights the importance of teamwork, determination, and individual worth, showing how a group of underprivileged individuals can rise above adversity and achieve greatness.
