In the movie Love Is Strange, Ben (played by John Lithgow) and George (played by Alfred Molina) are a loving couple living in New York City. After nearly four decades together, they decide to get married following the legalization of same-sex marriage. Their wedding is a joyful celebration surrounded by friends and family.

However, their new marital status soon leads to unexpected consequences. George, who works as a music teacher at a Catholic school, is fired due to the archdiocese's objections against same-sex marriage. In the face of the sudden loss of income, the couple struggles financially, and they are forced to sell their apartment.

Unable to afford another apartment in the city, Ben moves in with his nephew Elliot (played by Darren E. Burrows), his wife Kate (played by Marisa Tomei), and their teenage son Joey (played by Charlie Tahan) in Brooklyn. This living arrangement turns out to be challenging for all involved, as the close quarters create tension and disrupt their daily lives.

Meanwhile, George ends up staying with two gay police officers, Ted (played by Cheyenne Jackson) and Roberto (played by Manny Perez), who face their own relationship struggles.
