Before the Rain is a complex and interconnected drama that tells the story through three interconnected chapters, each focusing on different characters and taking place in different locations.

Chapter 1: "Words"

Set in Macedonia during the civil war in Bosnia, the film begins with a young Macedonian monk named Kiril, who has taken a vow of silence and lives in a secluded monastery. A local Muslim girl named Zamira seeks refuge with Kiril, claiming that she murdered one of the Christians who had been hunting her. Kiril decides to protect her and hides her in the monastery, defying the wishes of his fellow monks who are wary of getting involved in the violent conflict outside.

Chapter 2: "Faces"

This chapter takes place in London and focuses on a renowned photographic editor named Anne. Anne is pregnant and is experiencing a troubled relationship with her estranged husband, Nick. Feeling the need to talk and seek solace, Anne arranges a meeting with Nick at an upscale restaurant. As they discuss their failing marriage and unresolved issues, they try to find common ground and make sense of their relationship.

Chapter 3: "Pictures"

Returning back to Macedonia, the final chapter connects the two previous stories. Aleksander, a war photographer, is visiting his hometown in Macedonia after being injured while covering the war in Bosnia. He is haunted by the violence and brutality he has witnessed and is searching for some sort of redemption. While there, he gets involved in a blood feud between his family and their Muslim neighbors. As the violence escalates, Aleksander's fate becomes entwined with Kiril and Zamira's story, exploring the cyclical nature of violence and the consequences it brings.

The film weaves together these three chapters and explores themes of violence, love, and identity through its intricate storytelling. It examines how one's actions and choices can have a ripple effect, impacting the lives of others and perpetuating a cycle of violence. Before the Rain is a thought-provoking and emotionally gripping film that offers a compelling commentary on the human condition in times of conflict.
