As tensions in neighboring Rwanda escalate, Gabriel's peaceful childhood is abruptly disrupted. The Hutu-led government in Rwanda begins inciting violence against the Tutsi minority, resulting in a full-blown genocide. As news reaches Gabriel's neighborhood, fear and uncertainty grip the community.

Gabriel's father, a French expatriate who is heavily involved in humanitarian work, becomes increasingly concerned about the safety of their family. He starts taking precautions and making plans to evacuate them to safety. However, before they can leave, the violence spills over to Burundi, forcing them to abandon their home and flee.

Amidst the chaos, Gabriel's family faces numerous challenges as they navigate their way through an increasingly dangerous and hostile environment. They encounter roadblocks, violence, and the constant threat of being separated or targeted due to their mixed ethnic backgrounds. Gabriel witnesses firsthand the horrors of war, seeing friends and neighbors being attacked or killed.

During their harrowing journey, Gabriel's family eventually finds refuge in a crowded refugee camp. Despite the dire circumstances, Gabriel remains resilient and finds solace in his vivid imagination and the support of his family. He befriends other children in the camp, sharing stories, playing games, and creating a sense of normalcy amidst the chaos.

As time passes, Gabriel's family receives news that the violence is subsiding, and it is safe to return home. Despite the devastation and loss they have endured, their hope for a better future strengthens their determination to rebuild their lives. Gabriel, now matured beyond his years, emerges from the experience with a newfound appreciation for peace, unity, and the power of resilience.
