As Johnny Kapahala settles back into life in Hawaii, he finds himself caught in the middle of various conflicts. Firstly, he tries to connect with his new family, including his step-grandmother and step-uncle Chris, who is resistant to their new marriage and is distant towards Johnny. Despite this, Johnny tries to understand Chris and offers to teach him how to snowboard.

Meanwhile, Johnny's grandfather and new step-grandmother open a surf shop that also allows mountain boarders, combining their love for both surfing and snowboarding. The shop quickly gains popularity among the locals, much to the disappointment of a rival shop owner, named Troy, who sees this as a threat to his own business. Troy begins plotting to shut down Johnny's grandfather's shop.

To complicate matters further, Chris falls under the influence of a teenage bully and leader of a mountain boarding crew named Val, who pressures him to join their crew. Chris, seeking acceptance and belonging, starts hanging out with Val instead of bonding with his new family. This worries Johnny, who sees the trouble Val's crew brings, but he remains determined to be there for his step-uncle.

As the rivalry between the surf shops escalates, Johnny finds himself torn between supporting his grandfather's shop and trying to bridge the gap between Chris and their new family. He decides to compete in a mountain boarding competition where Val's crew will also participate. Johnny hopes that by showcasing his skills, he can earn Chris's respect and help him realize the importance of family.

During the competition, Johnny faces off against Val and the other members of his crew, displaying his snowboarding skills on the mountain board. Chris, witnessing Johnny's talent, begins to see his step-grandfather in a new light. Realizing he has been striving for acceptance from the wrong people, Chris starts to distance himself from Val and his crew.

In the end, Johnny's performance at the competition helps bring his family and the community together. Chris realizes the value of family bonds, and he and Johnny mend their relationship. Together, they confront Val and the bullies, choosing to prioritize their new family and loyalty over acceptance from the wrong crowd.

In an act of unity and forgiveness, Johnny's family extends an offer to Troy, the rival shop owner, to collaborate instead of competing. They propose a joint business venture where both surf and mountain boarding enthusiasts can come together. Troy accepts, and the two shops become successful, symbolizing the strength of unity and the importance of embracing both tradition and new experiences.

Through its themes of family, acceptance, and finding one's identity, "Johnny Kapahala - Back on Board" showcases Johnny's journey to reconcile with his step-family, repair broken relationships, and promote unity within the community.
