In "Ricki and the Flash," Ricki Rendazzo, formerly known as Linda Brummel, is a rock musician who left her husband Pete and their three children behind to pursue her dreams of becoming a rock star. She forms a band called "The Flash" and plays in small bars and clubs, but never achieves the success she hoped for.

Meanwhile, Pete remarries and builds a new life for himself and their children, Josh, Adam, and Julie. When Julie goes through a painful divorce and shows signs of depression, Pete reaches out to Ricki for help. Reluctantly, Ricki returns to her hometown in Indianapolis to support her family and face the consequences of her past choices.
