In the winter of 1820, the New England whaling ship Essex, led by Captain George Pollard Jr., sets sail on a voyage to hunt for whale oil. The crew is composed of experienced sailors and young recruits, including the first mate Owen Chase, who is ambitious but finds himself at odds with Captain Pollard's authority.

As the ship ventures into the Pacific Ocean, they encounter a massive sperm whale known as Moby Dick. The encounter turns violent when the whale rammingly attacks the Essex, damaging the ship and causing panic among the crew. Left with a crippled ship and limited supplies, the crew is forced to make a difficult decision: either make their way to the nearest islands or attempt to sail back to South America, thousands of miles away.

Choosing the latter option, the crew faces extreme hardships, including starvation and dehydration. They resort to drinking their own urine and surviving on meager rations. As the situation worsens, tensions rise within the crew, and the clash between Captain Pollard and Owen Chase intensifies. While Pollard is determined to maintain his authority, Chase takes charge of the situation, leading the crew in desperate attempts to keep the ship afloat and preserve their lives.

Eventually, the men reach a breaking point when it becomes clear that their survival depends on cannibalism. They draw lots to determine who will be sacrificed for sustenance. This grim decision, combined with the ongoing brutality of their journey, pushes the crew members to the edge of their sanity and tests their humanity.

Only a handful of survivors, including Owen Chase and Thomas Nickerson, one of the young recruits, ultimately make it back to civilization. They are rescued after spending months adrift at sea, enduring unimaginable hardships.

The survivors' harrowing tale of destruction and survival is later recounted in a novel by Thomas Nickerson, serving as the basis for Herman Melville's famous novel, Moby-Dick, which immortalizes the legend of the Essex and its encounter with the vengeful whale. Ultimately, the movie explores themes of human ambition, the power of nature, and the limits of survival in the face of overwhelming odds.
