J.C. Wiatt (played by Diane Keaton) is a successful, career-driven executive working in the fast-paced world of high finance in Manhattan. She lives the life of a super-yuppie, dedicating all her time and effort to her demanding job. However, her life takes an unexpected turn when she inherits a baby from a distant relative.

Initially, J.C. is completely caught off guard and has no idea how to take care of a baby. Working long hours and living a busy lifestyle, she struggles to cope with this new responsibility. Despite her initial reservations, J.C. decides to take on the challenge, and in doing so, her life undergoes a significant transformation.

J.C. realizes that raising a baby requires time and dedication, which clashes with her high-pressure career. With the help of her friend and neighbor, Charlotte (played by Sam Shepard), J.C. decides to leave her job and moves to a dilapidated farmhouse in rural Vermont. She envisions starting a new life for herself and her baby, Elizabeth.

In Vermont, J.C. attempts to adapt to her new rural surroundings and becomes a full-time mother, focusing on raising Elizabeth. She embraces the challenges of juggling domestic responsibilities, learning to cook, and trying her hand at gardening. Along the way, she also develops a romantic relationship with the local veterinarian, Dr. Jeff Cooper (played by Harold Ramis).

As J.C. settles into her new life, she finds unexpected success when she comes up with a homemade baby food recipe that becomes incredibly popular. Utilizing her business acumen, she decides to turn her recipe into a thriving baby food company, "Country Baby." J.C.'s entrepreneurial skills and determination lead her to face numerous hurdles and difficulties, including packaging mishaps, product recalls, and fierce competition. However, with the support and encouragement of the local community, she ultimately manages to overcome these obstacles and build a successful business.

While J.C. finds accomplishment in her professional life, she also discovers the importance of balancing work and family. Learning to prioritize her time and make time for herself and her loved ones, she realizes that her happiness and fulfillment lie in embracing both aspects of her life.

In the end, J.C. manages to create a harmonious balance between her career and family. She finds love, success, and fulfillment, proving that sometimes unexpected events can lead to a more fulfilling and meaningful life.
