In the 1956 film "Written on the Wind," directed by Douglas Sirk, the plot revolves around the dysfunctional Hadley family and the complexities of their relationships.

The story begins with Mitch Wayne (Rock Hudson), a geologist working for the Hadley family, which owns a prosperous oil business. The family patriarch, Jared Hadley (Robert Keith), is dedicated to expanding and maintaining their wealth. Meanwhile, Jared's son Kyle (Robert Stack) leads a reckless and self-indulgent lifestyle, drowning his sorrows in alcohol. Kyle's sister Marylee (Dorothy Malone) is notorious for her promiscuity and seeks attention and affection wherever she can find it.

Mitch has been friends with the Hadleys since childhood and harbors a secret love for Kyle's wife, Lucy (Lauren Bacall). However, Mitch suppresses his feelings and remains loyal to his friends. Lucy, feeling trapped in her loveless marriage, finds comfort in Mitch's companionship.

As the plot unfolds, it is revealed that Kyle is impotent, leading him to believe that he is infertile. Consequently, he becomes increasingly resentful and suspicious of Lucy's behavior and tries to prove that Mitch is the real father of their unborn child.

Marylee, driven by her bitterness and desire for revenge, accuses Mitch of having an affair with her father's secret mistress. Fueling her claims are pictures she has taken of Mitch and Lucy together, intending to ruin Mitch's reputation and hurt Lucy as well.

Driven to desperation by Marylee's accusations and his personal turmoil, Kyle confronts Mitch, resulting in a violent struggle that ends with Kyle's accidental death. Fearing their secret relationship will be exposed, Lucy and Mitch decide to dispose of the body and make it look like an accident.

During the subsequent investigation, suspicion falls on Mitch due to Marylee's previous claims against him. Marylee, desperate to protect her own reputation and ensure her share of the family fortune, attempts to manipulate the situation to frame Mitch as Kyle's murderer.

In a dramatic courtroom trial, the truth about Kyle's death is revealed, exonerating Mitch of any intentional wrongdoing. The film ultimately explores themes of love, desire, jealousy, and the destructive power of wealth and family dysfunction.
