As John Hollar returns to his Middle America hometown, he discovers that not much has changed since he left for New York City to pursue his dream of becoming an artist. The Hollars, his quirky and dysfunctional family, seem to be stuck in the same old routine.

However, the reason for John's sudden return is his mother's brain surgery, which is scheduled for the next day. He is accompanied by his girlfriend, Rebecca, who is eight months pregnant with their first child. As John navigates the familiar yet crazy world of his hometown, he realizes that his family is in desperate need of his support and love during this difficult time.

John's father, Don, is struggling to keep his struggling family business afloat. Meanwhile, his brother, Ron, is trapped in a failing marriage with his high school sweetheart, Stacey. The family dynamics are further complicated by the presence of John's high school rival, Jason, who is now married to John's ex-girlfriend, Gwen.

As the surgery approaches, tensions rise, and the Hollars must come together to face their past, confront their fears, and find a way to move forward. Through humorous and heartwarming moments, they learn the importance of family, forgiveness, and the strength that can be found in embracing one's roots.

Throughout the film, John also reflects on his own aspirations and confronts the fear of failure that led him to leave his hometown in the first place. As he reconnects with his family and witnesses the struggles they face, he gains a newfound appreciation for the love and support they have always provided.

In the end, The Hollars is a touching story that highlights the universal themes of love, family, and finding one's place in the world.
