I Am a Camera is a 1955 film adaptation of a play by John Van Druten, which itself is based on Christopher Isherwood's semi-autobiographical novel "Goodbye to Berlin". The story is set in 1930s Berlin, just before the rise of the Nazis.

The main protagonist, Chris, is an aspiring novelist from England who moves to Berlin to experience a bohemian lifestyle and find inspiration for his writing. Soon after his arrival, Chris meets Sally Bowles, a flamboyant cabaret entertainer at the Kit Kat Klub. Sally lives an extravagant and carefree life, indulging in hedonistic pleasures and pursuing her dreams of becoming an actress. Chris is intrigued by Sally's unconventional lifestyle and becomes infatuated with her.

As their friendship deepens, Chris is drawn into Sally's world and becomes more involved in the cabaret scene. He immerses himself in the colorful nightlife of Berlin, attending parties, socializing with artists, intellectuals, and sharing in the escapades of Sally and her acquaintances. However, beneath the surface of decadence and glamour, the political climate in Berlin becomes increasingly unstable.

Their Jewish friend, Fritz, faces growing persecution and discrimination as the Nazi Party gains power and influence. This leads to a turning point in the story, as Fritz's personal troubles confront Chris and Sally with the disturbing reality of the impending Nazi regime. The rising threat of fascism forces Chris and Sally to reevaluate their lives and confront the consequences of their carefree existence.

"I Am a Camera" explores themes of friendship, identity, and the clash between personal desires and political realities. It provides a snapshot of a specific time and place in history, capturing the vibrant yet dark atmosphere of pre-war Berlin and the tremors of change that would soon shape the world.
