Drama   Denmark

A Fortunate Man, based on the novel by Henrik Pontoppidan, follows the life of Per Sidenius, a young man determined to find happiness outside the confines of his strict religious upbringing. After leaving his family in Jutland, Per moves to Copenhagen to pursue his dream of becoming an engineer.

While studying engineering, Per becomes fascinated with renewable energy and develops a visionary project centered around harnessing wind and wave energy. His idea is groundbreaking and far ahead of its time, but it is met with skepticism and ridicule by his professors, who consider him both insane and overly self-confident.

Against all odds, Per manages to make his energy project a huge success. Alongside his achievements, he falls in love with Jakobe, a beautiful woman from a wealthy Jewish family. Their relationship blossoms, and they eventually get married. At this point, one would assume that Per has found true happiness.

However, despite his newfound success and love, Per cannot escape the haunting memories of his childhood. His dogmatic family, deeply rooted in religious traditions, refuses to accept his new life and constantly criticizes him for straying from their beliefs. This causes Per to question whether he is capable of breaking free from the patriarchal behavior of his father, which he fears he may repeat.

As Per's internal struggles intensify, he grapples with the realization that his past continues to shape his present. Despite his happiness, he finds himself plagued by the fear of becoming a replica of his father. As the story unfolds, it reveals the complexities of personal growth, the influence of upbringing, and the challenges of attempting to redefine oneself in the face of familial disapproval.
