Amsterdam Vallon, our protagonist, returns to the Five Points neighborhood in New York City after spending his childhood in an orphanage. His main objective is to avenge his father's death, who was ruthlessly murdered by Bill the Butcher, the notorious leader of the nativist gang, the Bowery Boys.
Upon his return, Amsterdam seeks to infiltrate Bill the Butcher's inner circle and gain his trust. He befriends and becomes a trusted ally of Johnny Sirocco, a pickpocket and member of the gang. As Amsterdam gains more influence within the gang, he learns about the complex power dynamics within the Five Points. The neighborhood is comprised of various rival ethnic groups, including Irish immigrants, African Americans, and the newly arriving wave of immigrants from Europe, particularly the Chinese.
As Amsterdam immerses himself in the world of the Five Points, he also becomes involved with Jenny Everdeane, a charismatic and street-smart pickpocket. Their romantic involvement further complicates Amsterdam's plans for revenge, especially when it is revealed that Jenny is also romantically connected to Bill the Butcher.
