Set in Galicia, a region in northern Spain, in 1921, The Island of Lies tells the story of the steamship Santa Isabel sinking off the coast of Sálvora Island. Onboard the ship are over two hundred emigrants who were traveling to Argentina. Three courageous island women, María, Josefa, and Cipriana, set sail aboard a fragile skiff to rescue the shipwrecked passengers.

Their brave rescue efforts catch the attention of the authorities, who hail them as heroes. However, a curious and persistent Argentinean journalist named León becomes intrigued by the incident and starts digging deeper. He begins to ask uncomfortable questions and uncovers troubling information surrounding the sinking of the Santa Isabel.

As León investigates, he discovers that the authorities may be hiding the real truth about the accident. The journalist's relentless pursuit of the truth puts him at odds with the cynical officials who are protecting their own interests. León's investigation takes him on a journey filled with political intrigues, corruption, and deception.

Meanwhile, María, Josefa, and Cipriana, despite receiving praise from the authorities, find themselves caught in the middle of the web of lies. They become torn between maintaining their status as heroines and revealing the truth about what really happened that fateful day.

As the story unfolds, León and the women face various obstacles and dangers, including threats and intimidation from those trying to keep the truth buried. Their journey to uncover the truth becomes a fight for justice, not just for the victims of the shipwreck but for the entire community affected by the tragedy.
