In Whatever Works, Boris Yellnikoff, a brilliant and eccentric physicist, lives a solitary life in New York City, despising the idiocy of humanity and embracing his misanthropic nature. One day, he encounters a young, naive runaway named Melody St. Ann Celestine, who hails from Mississippi. Despite their significant age difference, the two start an unlikely relationship and Melody moves into Boris' apartment.

As Melody becomes acquainted with Boris' cynical outlook on life and his intellectual pursuits, she begins to develop her own perspective, questioning her conservative upbringing and exploring her own desires and dreams. Boris, in turn, finds himself gradually opening up to the possibility of happiness and love.

However, their peaceful coexistence is disrupted when Melody's uptight parents, Marietta and John, unexpectedly arrive in New York to take their daughter back home. Unfazed by Boris' oddities, Marietta becomes increasingly intrigued by his unconventional ideas and hypotheses. Meanwhile, John, though initially disapproving, becomes infatuated with a beautiful young woman named Rita, who happens to be Melody's former classmate.

Caught up in a whirlwind of unexpected romantic entanglements, the characters find themselves facing a series of comedic and bittersweet situations. As Boris and Melody's relationship deepens, they also encounter challenges when Melody's parents, as well as Boris' own friends, struggle to comprehend and accept their unconventional connection.

Through a series of experiences and interactions, the characters come to learn that love and emotional fulfillment exist beyond societal norms. They realize that fate, chance encounters, and embracing "whatever works" are crucial elements in finding happiness and fulfillment in life.

Throughout the film, the witty dialogue, peculiar situations, and Woody Allen's signature humor provide insight into existential questions while exploring the themes of love, acceptance, and the pursuit of personal happiness.
