In the movie "Anastasia," the story begins in 1928 Paris where a group of Russian exiles, led by General Sergei Bounine, plans to seize ten million pounds from the Bank of England. They aim to achieve this by training a financially struggling and suicidal young woman named Anna Koreff, who bears a striking resemblance to Anastasia Romanov, the youngest daughter of Tsar Nicholas II of Russia, who was believed to have been killed during the Russian Revolution.

Bounine and his co-conspirators meticulously groom Anna and teach her about the Romanov family's history, mannerisms, and the details of Anastasia's life. As Anna's transformation progresses, Bounine becomes increasingly convinced that she might indeed be the real Anastasia. However, the audience remains skeptical about her true identity.

News of Anna's emergence as a potential surviving Romanov reaches the Dowager Empress Maria Feodorovna, the grandmother of the Romanov family. Empress Maria is living in Paris at that time and is haunted by the loss of her family. She arranges a meeting with Anna, and the encounter reignites her hope that her beloved granddaughter might be alive.

To ascertain Anna's legitimacy, Empress Maria examines Anna's knowledge of personal anecdotes, events, and locations only the true Anastasia would know. The investigation causes turmoil within the Imperial Court and the Russian exiles, who start to question Anna's authenticity themselves.

As the plot thickens, Anna's true origins remain mysterious, leaving the audience wondering if she is genuinely Anastasia or an imposter cleverly coached by the exiles. The film culminates in a highly emotional courtroom scene where Empress Maria must make the final decision to confirm or reject Anna's claim to the Russian throne and the Romanov family's wealth.

The outcome of the case and Anna's true identity are intentionally left uncertain, allowing the viewers to draw their conclusions. The film explores themes of identity, personal transformation, and the lasting impact of historical events on individuals and their families.
