In the movie Last Flag Flying, Larry "Doc" Shepherd, a former Navy Corpsman who served in Vietnam, reaches out to his old friends Sal Nealon, a former Marine, and the Rev. Richard Mueller, a former Navy chaplain, for help in burying his son, Marine Lance Corporal Larry "Doc" Shepherd Jr. who was killed in Iraq.

Doc Jr.'s body is supposed to be buried with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery. However, Doc Sr. decides to take a different path and requests his friends to accompany him on a road trip to his hometown in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, where he wants to lay his son to rest. Along the way, they carry the casket in a car rental instead of a military transport, as Doc didn't want his son to be buried in a place he had never been.

During the road trip, the three men find themselves dealing with their own personal struggles and reflecting on their experiences from the Vietnam War. The memories of their time in the war resurface, bringing out emotions and unresolved issues they had long buried. Through their conversations and encounters, they confront the devastating effects of war on themselves and the families left behind.

As they make their way to Portsmouth, they face various challenges and obstacles. They encounter difficulties with the authorities and military officials who question their decision to deviate from the traditional burial plans. They also meet up with Doc's wife, who has been estranged from him for many years, and they try to mend their relationship amidst the grief and loss they are all experiencing.

Throughout the journey, the friendship between Doc, Sal, and Richard is tested and strengthened. They find solace in each other's company, sharing stories of their youth, their time in Vietnam, and the impact it has had on their lives. Together, they navigate the complexities of grief, honor, and the bonds formed through shared military experiences.

In the end, Doc Jr. is laid to rest in a local cemetery, surrounded by his father's closest friends. The movie highlights the lasting effects of war, the enduring friendship between veterans, and the resilience needed to confront loss and continue on with life.
