In the movie Passengers, the spacecraft is named the "Starship Avalon" and is transporting 5,000 passengers in hibernation pods to a distant colony planet called "Homestead II." The journey is expected to take 120 years.

However, 30 years into the voyage, the spaceship encounters a severe asteroid collision that causes a malfunction in one of the hibernation pods. As a result, engineer Jim Preston (played by Chris Pratt) is prematurely awakened from his sleep chamber.

Stranded alone onboard the ship with no way to re-enter hibernation, Jim finds himself struggling with his isolation and the prospect of spending the rest of his life alone. He attempts to occupy his time by exploring the luxurious spaceship and its facilities, eventually stumbling upon the sleeping pod of Aurora Lane (played by Jennifer Lawrence), a writer.

Attracted to Aurora's profile and desperate for companionship, Jim contemplates waking her up. After battling with his moral dilemma, loneliness, and the feeling of unfairness, Jim ultimately decides to revive her without informing her about the malfunction or his involvement. After pretending he also woke up early due to a mysterious glitch in the pods, Jim and Aurora grow closer and eventually fall in love.

As they spend time together, Jim struggles with the guilt of his secret, but chooses to keep it hidden to maintain their relationship. As days turn into months, the spaceship faces various technical issues, which further raise suspicions and doubts in Aurora's mind.

Eventually, Arthur, the ship's android bartender (portrayed by Michael Sheen), accidentally reveals to Aurora the truth about her premature awakening. Devastated and betrayed, Aurora distances herself from Jim. However, their bond is tested when the ship starts experiencing even more life-threatening malfunctions.

Jim and Aurora must work together to save the spaceship and its remaining passengers from imminent disaster. They slowly reconcile and attempt to repair the ship alongside a few other surviving crew members. Along the way, they uncover the true cause of the malfunctions, realizing that the ship is facing a catastrophic system failure.

As the situation worsens, Jim risks his life in a spacewalk to manually fix the failing systems, ultimately saving the lives of everyone onboard. However, his actions lead to severe damage to the spaceship, leaving the colony planeta lifeless and inhospitable.

Years later, as the ship approaches another habitable planet, a new civilization of passengers emerges from the pods. Among them are the descendants of Jim and Aurora, who lived and died on the ship while their children and their children's children were born and grew up.

The movie ends with the new generation of passengers stepping onto their new home, while Jim and Aurora's story remains preserved as a legend, highlighting the complex moral and ethical choices faced by the original passengers and their untold journey.
