Zia, a young man devastated by his recent breakup, succumbs to his despair and decides to end his life by wrist-cutting. However, instead of finding a traditional afterlife, he awakens in a rundown version of the world he knew, which closely resembles his old life, except slightly worse. This strange place is populated by others who have also taken their own lives.

As Zia navigates this new reality, he discovers that his ex-girlfriend, Desiree, has also committed suicide and is now part of this purgatory. Motivated by this new revelation, Zia sets out on a road trip to find her, accompanied by his eccentric and music-loving Russian friend, Eugene, who also ended his life tragically.

Their journey takes them through a series of bizarre and quirky towns within the afterlife, encountering a unique assortment of characters along the way. They meet Mikal, a feisty hitchhiker who claims to have mistakenly ended up in this realm. Mikal insists that she is searching for the "people in charge" to complain about her wrongful death.

As they continue their quest for Desiree, Zia, Eugene, and Mikal encounter strange phenomena and unexpected adventures. They stumble upon a peculiar cult led by Messiah, a charismatic figure who promises an escape from their dreary existence. Feeling disillusioned with the afterlife, Zia is briefly enticed by the cult's promise of something better.

However, as their journey progresses, the trio begins to question whether they truly want to escape this purgatory or if they should embrace the opportunities for growth and change it offers. Zia begins to see past his troubled past and rekindles a relationship with Mikal. Along the way, they find solace, love, and even a sense of purpose in this new, unconventional afterlife.

Ultimately, Wristcutters: A Love Story tells a tale of hope and redemption, illustrating that even in the face of despair and irrevocable decisions, life (or an afterlife) still holds unexpected joys and meaningful connections. The characters learn to find "life" and happiness beyond death, realizing that they don't have to stop living just because they are dead.
