As Thanksgiving approaches, April Burns decides to make an effort to reconnect with her estranged family. However, her family, including her mother Joy, father Jim, and two siblings, Beth and Timmy, have always seen her as the black sheep of the family due to her rebellious nature and unconventional lifestyle.

April lives with her boyfriend Bobby in a rundown apartment in New York City. She plans to host Thanksgiving dinner at their place, hoping to create a memorable experience to bridge the gap between her and her family. However, April faces several challenges as she tries to prepare the dinner.

The movie takes us through April's misadventures in the kitchen as she realizes she has never cooked a full Thanksgiving meal before. She encounters numerous obstacles, including a broken oven and a misjudgment in turkey defrosting time. As the elements of her meal keep falling apart, she desperately seeks help from her neighbors.

Meanwhile, April's family embarks on a road trip to reach her apartment. They make several stops along the way, hinting at the strained dynamics within the family. Joy, April's terminally ill mother, is particularly determined to make it despite her deteriorating health.

While April struggles in the kitchen, her neighbors, who initially seem distant and difficult, start to chip in and assist her. They become an unexpected support system during her time of need. The neighbors, including a punk rocker named Wayne, a sweet elderly woman named Evette, and a charismatic couple named Bobby and Jamey, help April with various aspects of her meal preparation, offering guidance and sharing their own Thanksgiving traditions.

As the day progresses and family members begin to arrive, the tension grows. April's father, Jim, tries to navigate the unfamiliar city, occasionally getting lost and displaying his frustration. Beth and Timmy, April's siblings, bicker and express their disapproval of April's lifestyle choices, further exacerbating the strained family dynamic.

However, as April's family witnesses her determination and resourcefulness, their perception of her begins to shift. They start to realize her genuine intentions of bridging the gap and creating a loving Thanksgiving celebration for their mother. The journey becomes a reflection of their own personal growth, as well as an opportunity for them to appreciate April's rebellious spirit and unique personality.

In the end, April manages to pull off a somewhat unconventional Thanksgiving dinner, filled with mishaps and unconventional dishes. The meal brings everyone together, allowing them to express their love for each other despite their differences. The gathering becomes a bittersweet moment as they confront the reality of Joy's declining health.

"Pieces of April" is a heartwarming and poignant portrayal of forgiveness, acceptance, and the power of family bonds, even in the face of adversity. It explores the complexities of relationships and the importance of finding common ground and understanding between divergent personalities.
