Gray Lady Down is a 1978 American submarine disaster film directed by David Greene and based on the novel by David Lavallee. The film stars Charlton Heston, David Carradine, and Stacy Keach.
The USS Neptune, a state-of-the-art nuclear submarine, is on a routine patrol when it collides with a Norwegian cargo ship and sinks to the ocean floor off the coast of Connecticut. Captain Paul Blanchard (played by Charlton Heston) and his crew are trapped in the rapidly flooding vessel, with limited oxygen and dwindling hope of rescue.
The navy frantically works to rescue the crew, including using a deep-water salvage expert, Captain Hal Hamilton (played by David Carradine), to come up with a plan to save the crew. As the clock ticks and tensions rise, the crew must work together to survive in the tight quarters of the submarine and navigate the dangerous situation they find themselves in.
The film highlights the bravery and perseverance of the crew as they face the life-threatening situation, and the high-stakes efforts of the navy to execute a dangerous rescue mission. Gray Lady Down is a gripping and intense portrayal of a submarine disaster and the desperate fight for survival.
