Drama   United States of America

In "This Teacher," the main character is a young Muslim woman named Hafsia who is visiting New York City for the first time. Hafsia is a French-Algerian woman studying for her phD in comparative literature in Paris. She decides to visit her childhood friend Zaynab, who now lives in Brooklyn.

Zaynab is a free-spirited, rebellious artist who has fully embraced the city's vibrant and diverse culture. However, when Hafsia arrives at Zaynab's apartment, she learns that her friend is absent and will not be returning for a few days. Refusing to simply leave, Hafsia decides to stay in the apartment and wait for Zaynab's return.

As Hafsia waits for her friend to come back, she becomes increasingly immersed in the unfamiliar environment of Brooklyn. Through chance encounters and interactions with various characters, she starts to question her own identity and beliefs. Hafsia grapples with her traditional, conservative upbringing and the newfound freedoms she witnesses around her.

During her stay, Hafsia befriends her upstairs neighbor, Émilie, a young French waitress who is struggling to make ends meet. Émilie's own journey starts to mirror Hafsia's as she begins to question her own decisions and values. Together, they explore the city, challenging each other's perspectives and confronting their own insecurities and fears.

Meanwhile, Zaynab returns to find Hafsia and Émilie bonding over their shared experiences. Zaynab is delighted to see her friend embracing the city's diversity but also notices Hafsia's growing disillusionment with her culture and religion. Hafsia's conflicting emotions eventually come to a head, causing a strain in their friendship as they confront their differences and the paths they have chosen.

"This Teacher" is a thought-provoking portrayal of cultural identity, the clash between tradition and modernity, and the challenges faced by young Muslim women navigating a new environment. Through Hafsia's journey, the film explores themes of self-discovery, acceptance, and the complexities of friendship in a world that often feels disorienting and disquieting.
