After his laboratory is destroyed, Dr. Peyton Westlake is left horrendously disfigured and burning with a thirst for revenge against those who destroyed his life. Using his expertise in synthetic skin technology, he creates a mask for himself that allows him to assume different identities as he goes after his enemies.
Darkman begins his quest by seeking out the gangsters responsible for his transformation: Robert Durant, an influential crime boss, and his crew. As he tracks them down one by one, Darkman infiltrates their operations and brutally takes them out using both his intellect and his newfound physical strength.
During his pursuit, Darkman reconnects with his former love, attorney Julie Hastings. However, he struggles with revealing his true identity to her because of his disfigurement. Nevertheless, he begins to form a genuine bond with Julie as he reveals portions of his past and his quest for vengeance.
