In the movie Affliction, the small town policeman referred to as Wade Whitehouse, played by Nick Nolte, finds himself caught in a web of mystery and buried truths surrounding a seemingly accidental death during a hunting trip. As he delves deeper into the investigation, he becomes increasingly obsessed with solving the case and starts to uncover dark secrets about the individuals involved.

Wade sees the case as an opportunity to prove himself and gain respect within his community, but he soon realizes that powerful figures in the town are pushing back against him. As he makes progress, he begins to experience paranoid hallucinations and mentally deteriorates, haunted by his traumatic childhood memories and his strained relationship with his abusive father, Glen Whitehouse, played by James Coburn.

Wade's mental disintegration intensifies when he discovers evidence that suggests the hunting accident may be a deliberate act of violence rather than a mere mishap. He becomes more aggressive, confrontational, and unpredictable, alienating those closest to him, such as his girlfriend Margie Fogg, played by Sissy Spacek, and his daughter Jill, played by Brigid Tierney.

As the investigation unfolds, it becomes apparent that there is a larger conspiracy at play involving the town's influential citizens and corrupt authorities. Wade's relentless pursuit of the truth puts a strain on his already precarious mental state. His encounters with various suspects, including his own brother Rolfe, played by Willem Dafoe, and local millionaire Jack Hewitt, played by Jim True-Frost, further contribute to his downward spiral.

Unable to handle the mounting pressure on his sanity, Wade becomes increasingly violent and erratic. His actions attract attention from the community, making him an outcast in his own town. Amid his deteriorating mental health, he becomes fixated on uncovering the truth, no matter the personal cost.

In the gripping finale, Wade confronts the culprits behind the hunting accident, ultimately leading to a tragic confrontation that tests his limits and brings the darkness hidden beneath the town's idyllic facade to light. Affliction serves as a character study, exploring the effects of trauma, personal history, and obsession on an individual's psyche, blurring the lines between reality and madness.
