In the movie Heroic Purgatory, Rikiya Shoda, an engineer working for the Atomic Agency in Japan, leads a seemingly ordinary life with his wife Nanako. However, their tranquil existence is disrupted when Nanako brings home a lost teenager named Ayu. Ayu insists that Rikiya and Nanako are her parents, but a man claiming to be her father appears and demands to take her back.

As Ayu's presence creates tension and confusion in their household, Rikiya starts experiencing vivid flashbacks and recollections of his youth as a revolutionary. These memories transport him back to a time when he and his comrades fought against societal injustice and oppression.
