As the plot of the movie The Confession unfolds, Harry Fertig, a grieving father, seeks justice for the death of his young son, who passed away due to the negligence of medical professionals at a hospital. Consumed by grief and anger, Fertig takes matters into his own hands and decides to seek revenge by killing the doctors responsible for his son's death.

Meanwhile, Roy Bleakie, a slick and self-absorbed lawyer, is assigned to defend Fertig in court. Bleakie is primarily concerned with winning the case and is indifferent to the ethical and moral implications underlying it. However, as he delves deeper into the details of the case, he begins to feel conflicted.

Bleakie's internal struggle intensifies when he discovers that Fertig intends to plead guilty. This revelation forces him to reevaluate his own morals and question whether he should be defending a man who took matters into his own hands, despite the understandable pain and grief he had experienced.

As the trial progresses, Bleakie engages in a series of exchanges with Fertig, trying to understand the motivations behind his actions. Through their conversations and interactions, Bleakie begins to empathize with Fertig's grief and the anguish he suffered at the hands of the negligent doctors.

Throughout the movie, Bleakie finds himself torn between fulfilling his duty as a lawyer and grappling with the ethical dilemma presented by Fertig's case. He must confront his own moral compass and ultimately decide whether he should continue to defend a man who exacted revenge or pursue a different course of action that aligns with his own sense of justice.
