As the story progresses in the movie Brother's Friend, Mai, the younger sister of Yukihiro Nanase, becomes increasingly intrigued by Sota Nishino's comment about her appearance. Unbeknownst to Sota, Mai starts developing feelings for him and begins finding ways to spend more time with him.

Mai starts participating in activities that she knows Sota enjoys, such as joining the same school club or attending the same events. She often finds herself blushing, stuttering, and trying to impress Sota whenever they interact. However, Sota remains oblivious to Mai's growing feelings as he treats her like a younger sister and focuses on maintaining their friendship.

Eventually, Mai's actions catch the attention of her best friend, Ayumi. Ayumi notices that Mai's behavior has changed and suspects that she has developed a crush. Curious, Ayumi confronts Mai about her feelings, and Mai finally admits her affection for Sota. Ayumi, being a supportive friend, encourages Mai to confess her feelings to Sota and reassures her that it is worth taking the risk.

Encouraged by Ayumi's words, Mai musters up the courage to confess her feelings to Sota. However, just as she is about to tell him, Yukihiro, Mai's brother, discovers her intentions. Yukihiro, surprised and concerned about the potential relationship between his friend and sister, advises Mai against pursuing Sota. He worries about potential complications and the impact it might have on their friendship.

Despite her brother's warning, Mai decides to take a leap of faith and confesses her feelings to Sota. The revelation surprises Sota, who had never considered Mai in a romantic light. He struggles to process his own emotions, torn between preserving their friendship and potentially exploring a romantic relationship. The movie explores the complexities of their relationship dynamics, the impact on their friend group, and the ultimate decision they make about the future of their connection.
