The movie "Taking Woodstock" is based on the true story of Elliot Tiber and his family's involvement in the iconic Woodstock Music and Arts Festival in 1969. Elliot, portrayed by Demetri Martin, lives with his parents Jake (Henry Goodman) and Sonia (Imelda Staunton) in a rundown motel called the El Monaco in Bethel, New York.

One day, Elliot reads in the newspaper that a neighboring town has canceled the permit for a hippie music festival. Sensing an opportunity to bring business to his family's struggling motel, he contacts the festival organizers and offers them the use of a field on his neighbor's farm in White Lake as an alternative venue.

After some negotiations, Elliot successfully convinces the festival producers to relocate to Bethel. As word gets out, the festival attracts significant media attention, and soon half a million people are expected to attend the event.

As preparations for the festival begin, Elliot's personal life also undergoes some changes. He becomes acquainted with a group of eccentric artists and musicians who will later become influential figures at Woodstock. Through these encounters, Elliot starts to embrace his own identity and sexuality.

Throughout the chaotic unfolding of the event, Elliot finds himself caught between the demands of the festival organizers, the locals who are skeptical of the hippie counterculture, and the various attendees who are descending upon the area in search of peace, love, and music.

The film highlights the challenges involved in organizing an event of such magnitude, including dealing with logistical issues, providing essential services to the attendees, and managing the financial aspects. It also delves into the personal journeys of its characters, portraying the transformative impact that Woodstock had on their lives and the wider American culture.

"Taking Woodstock" explores themes of acceptance, freedom of expression, and the power of music to bring people together. Ultimately, the movie portrays Elliot Tiber and his family as unintentional heroes who played a crucial role in the success and cultural significance of the Woodstock Music and Arts Festival.
