Alice Adams is a 1935 film directed by George Stevens and based on the novel of the same name by Booth Tarkington. The movie follows the aspirations and struggles of the Adams family, particularly the titular character, Alice Adams.

Alice Adams is a lower-middle-class young woman living in a small town. Despite her family's modest background, she dreams of a higher social standing and yearns to be part of the elite circles of society. Alice's father and brother, Virgil, work at a local drugstore and are content with their lives. However, her mother, Mrs. Adams, and Alice are not satisfied with their current status and constantly try to climb the social ladder.

Alice gets a job as a stenographer in a manufacturing company but feels inadequate compared to her wealthier co-workers. She creates a false persona, pretending to be affluent and well-connected, and tries to impress her colleagues with her fabricated lifestyle. However, her efforts result in embarrassment and rejection.

One day, Alice meets a handsome and well-to-do young man named Arthur Russell at a social event. She is instantly infatuated with him and believes he could be her ticket to the upper-class life she desires. With her mother's encouragement, Alice sets up a dinner at her home to introduce Arthur to her family.

In an attempt to create an upscale atmosphere, Mrs. Adams nags her husband, Mr. Adams, into investing their savings in a risky business venture. The plan is to use the potential profits to show off their newfound wealth and impress Arthur. However, the investment fails, resulting in financial ruin for the Adams family.

Despite their financial misfortunes, the family proceeds with the dinner. However, it soon becomes clear that their lower-class background is evident to Arthur and his sophisticated friends. Alice's attempts to disguise her family's humble origins are futile as they are exposed during the dinner. The family's extravagant gesture is ridiculed, and the embarrassment drives Alice to the brink of despair.

Ultimately, Arthur recognizes Alice's genuine qualities and learns about her family's struggles. He realizes that Alice is not the socialite she pretended to be but still appreciates her for who she truly is. Their love for each other transcends social status, and Arthur decides to stay with Alice despite the disastrous dinner.

Alice Adams is a poignant and bittersweet tale of aspirations, social class, and the complexities of human relationships. It explores themes of authenticity, self-acceptance, and the pursuit of happiness in the face of societal pressures.
