After inheriting his uncle's vast fortune, Longfellow Deeds remains true to his humble roots. He moves to New York City, where he plans to use his newfound wealth to make a difference in people's lives. However, he soon discovers that his new status attracts greedy individuals who try to exploit him.

One of these opportunists is Babe Bennett, a tabloid reporter looking to uncover a scandalous story for her TV show. To get closer to Deeds and gather more information, she pretends to be a simple, small-town girl named Pam Dawson and befriends him. Over time, Deeds and Pam develop a genuine connection, and Pam starts to question her initial motives.

As Deeds navigates his way through the city, the story unfolds with various comedic incidents. He encounters eccentric characters, including Emilio Lopez, his trusted butler, who helps him adjust to his new lifestyle. Deeds also forms a friendship with Chuck Cedar, a struggling poet who works as a waiter.

Meanwhile, members of the Deeds's uncle's law firm try to undermine him in an attempt to gain control of the fortune themselves.
