From Up on Poppy Hill is a Studio Ghibli film directed by Goro Miyazaki. The story takes place in Yokohama, Japan in 1963, as the city prepares for the upcoming 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games. The main character, Umi Matsuzaki, is a high school student living in a boarding house with her siblings while her mother is studying abroad.

Umi's father died during the Korean War, and her mother's absence has left her responsible for taking care of her family. Every morning, she raises signal flags outside her house to communicate with passing ships in honor of her father, who was a sailor.

Umi is drawn to a dilapidated clubhouse on their school's campus known as the "Latin Quartier." The clubhouse holds fond memories for Umi, as it was once a place where she found comfort during the war. However, the school administration plans to demolish the building to make way for a modern structure.

Umi joins a group of students called the "Latin Club" who are determined to save the clubhouse. Led by a charismatic and passionate young man named Shun Kazama, the students organize protests, collect signatures, and raise awareness about the cultural significance of preserving the old building.

As Umi and Shun work together on their mission, they develop a strong bond and gradually fall in love. However, their relationship takes an unexpected turn when a secret about their past is revealed. It is discovered that they may be siblings, and the revelation threatens to tear them apart.

Despite the emotional turmoil, Umi and Shun continue to fight for the clubhouse and their shared cause. They refuse to let the difficulties they face overpower their determination. With the support of their friends and the community, they unite to confront the challenges of their reality and unlock the mysteries of their intertwined past.

From Up on Poppy Hill explores themes of love, family, and the importance of preserving history. It showcases the resilience and courage of youth as they navigate their personal struggles while working towards a common goal.
