Frances, a young Irish Traveller girl with a fiery spirit, dreams of becoming a professional boxer. Inspired by her idol, Muhammad Ali, she spends her days training and honing her skills, determined to prove herself to the world. Her father, Michael, has recently been released from prison and holds a complicated relationship with Frances. While he initially appears supportive of her dream, it becomes clear that he has other plans for his daughter.

As Frances prepares for her first boxing match, she faces various challenges both inside and outside the ring. Living within a patriarchal society, she encounters prejudice and resistance from those who believe women should not engage in such a physically demanding sport. However, her determination and talent catch the attention of Coach Kelly, a former boxing champion who becomes her mentor.

Simultaneously, Frances navigates her troubled relationship with her father, who wants her to follow a more traditional path and conform to societal norms. Michael, struggling with his own demons, attempts to impose his own desires and expectations onto Frances. This puts her in a constant struggle between her passion for boxing and her deep longing for her father's approval and love.

As Frances continues to fight for her dreams, she finds solace in the unwavering support of her mother and her close-knit Traveller community. She becomes an inspiration to other young girls within her community, encouraging them to pursue their own ambitions. Together, they challenge societal expectations and break free from the limitations placed upon them.

In her journey to prove her strength and make her father proud, Frances faces her biggest test in the ring. With determination and the support of those who believe in her, she overcomes her self-doubt and fights with all her heart. Along the way, she discovers that her worth is not defined by the opinions of others, but by her own inner strength and resilience.

Float Like a Butterfly is a heartfelt and empowering film that explores themes of identity, family, gender roles, and the pursuit of dreams. Through Frances' journey, it sheds light on the struggles faced by marginalized communities and the power of perseverance in the face of adversity.
