Troop Zero follows the story of Christmas Flint, a spunky and imaginative young girl growing up in a rural town in Georgia in 1977. Christmas is an outsider, often teased by her schoolmates and living with her well-meaning but somewhat absentminded father, Ramsey Flint.

One day, Christmas learns about a nationwide competition held by NASA, which offers children the opportunity to have their voices recorded on the prestigious Golden Record, a time capsule set to be sent into outer space. This sparks an ambitious dream within Christmas to have her voice heard by aliens beyond Earth.

Determined to seize this chance, Christmas assembles a group of misfits known as the Birdie Scouts, who become her makeshift troupe. The group includes Joseph, a boy who loves magic tricks but is often teased for his effeminate nature, Hell-No, a fiery and rebellious tomboy, Smash, a tough and protective girl, and Anne-Claire, the daughter of the town's wealthy lawyer who reluctantly joins the troop. With her newfound friends, Christmas sets out to earn the necessary badges and train to become the best Birdie Scout troop in all of Georgia.

Throughout their journey, the troop faces various challenges, including learning traditional scout skills like camping and survival techniques, as well as dealing with personal struggles and conflicts amongst themselves. They clash with the snobbish and exclusive Birdie Scout group, the Red Feathers, led by the intimidating and competitive Miss Massey. Despite setbacks and setbacks, Christmas and her troop persist, discovering the true value of friendship, teamwork, and loyalty.

As the competition draws closer, the pressure builds, and Christmas has to confront her own fears and insecurities. Through perseverance, determination, and the belief that being oneself is enough, the troop ultimately finds their voice, both metaphorically and literally, during their final performance. Their moving and heartfelt performance captivates not only the audience but also the judges, securing their place on the Golden Record.

In the end, Troop Zero is not just a story about Christmas achieving her dreams; it's a heartwarming tale about the power of friendship, acceptance, and the importance of staying true to oneself, no matter the odds.
