In Dumplin', Willowdean Dickson is a confident and plus-sized teenager living in a small Texas town. Despite her self-assured nature, she constantly feels the pressure of conforming to the skinny beauty standards set by society, especially because her mother, Rosie, is a former beauty queen and now runs the local pageant.

To challenge these norms and prove a point about self-acceptance, Willowdean decides to enter the Miss Teen Bluebonnet pageant, organized by her mother. Her unexpected participation both surprises and challenges those around her. As the news spreads, several girls from different backgrounds and body types are inspired by Willowdean's courage and personality, and they too decide to join the pageant.

Alongside her best friend, Ellen, and other misfit contestants, Willowdean faces various obstacles throughout the competition, from rigorous training to judgmental peers. However, she remains unwavering and determined to prove that beauty comes in all shapes and sizes. Her journey not only teaches her valuable lessons about self-acceptance but also inspires those around her to embrace their uniqueness.

Throughout the film, Willowdean also navigates her relationship with her mother, Rosie, who struggles to understand her daughter's perspective and unconventional choices. Rosie, dealing with her own insecurities, eventually realizes the importance of supporting Willowdean's journey and accepting her as she is.

As the pageant approaches, conflict arises between the traditional ideals of beauty represented by a group of girls known as the "Dazzling Daughters," who criticize and try to sabotage Willowdean and her supportive friends. Despite the challenges, Willowdean and her newfound group of misfit girls find strength in their friendship and continue to defy societal expectations.

In the end, the pageant becomes a platform for these young women to embrace themselves and challenge the narrow definitions of beauty. The film focuses on the power of self-love, acceptance, and the importance of standing up against societal norms that dictate one's worth based on appearance.
