In The King of Staten Island, Scott, the main character, has been stuck in a perpetual state of arrested development ever since his firefighter father died when he was young. At this point in his mid-20s, he hasn't achieved much and is still chasing his dream of becoming a tattoo artist, which often feels unattainable.

Meanwhile, Scott's younger sister is heading off to college, leaving him still living with his exhausted ER nurse mother. Scott spends his days smoking weed, hanging out with his friends Oscar, Igor, and Richie, and engaging in a secret casual relationship with his childhood friend Kelsey.

However, things take a turn when Scott's mother starts dating Ray, a loudmouth firefighter. This unexpected relationship triggers a series of events that force Scott to confront his unresolved grief and finally start taking steps towards moving forward in his life.

Throughout the movie, Scott grapples with various challenges and emotions, including finding a purpose in life, dealing with his father's legacy, and understanding the impact of his own choices. As he navigates through these situations, Scott begins to mature and discover his true potential, ultimately leading him on a path towards personal growth and a potential future beyond his current circumstances.
