In the movie "Kes," set in Northern England, we follow the life of Billy Casper, a 15-year-old boy from a working-class family who faces challenges at school and a troubled home life. Billy finds solace and a sense of purpose by caring for and training a wild kestrel falcon he names Kes.

Billy discovers a book on falconry at the local library and becomes fascinated by its contents. He spends his free time learning about the ancient art and researching falconry techniques. He eventually traps a young kestrel from a nest, appropriating it as his own and decides to train it to hunt.

Despite facing criticism and ridicule from his family, classmates, and teachers, Billy pours his heart and soul into forming a close bond with Kes. He begins training the bird, teaching it to fly to his hand, and eventually progressing to basic hunting skills.

As the relationship between Billy and Kes grows, so does Billy's confidence and self-worth. With Kes as his companion, Billy gains a renewed sense of purpose and motivation in life. He feels a deep connection to the bird and finds a refuge from the hardships he faces daily.

However, as Billy's life starts to show signs of improvement, his hopes are dashed when tragedy strikes. A group of bullies from Billy's school attacks and kills Kes, leaving Billy devastated.

Overwhelmed with grief, Billy gives up on everything in his life. His dreams of escaping the working-class cycle and finding his place in the world seem crushed. The film ends on a poignant note, with Billy returning to his bleak routine, forever changed by the loss of his beloved falcon.

"Kes" is a touching and poignant coming-of-age story that explores themes of class divide, the power of nature and companionship, and the struggles faced by working-class youth in finding their identity and purpose.
