In the movie The Earrings of Madame de..., directed by Max Ophüls, the plot revolves around the intricate and tragic love triangle formed by the Countess Louise de... (referred to as Madame de...), her husband, the General André de..., and her lover, the Baron Donati.

After selling the earrings, Madame de... claims to have lost them, but unbeknownst to her, the General discovers her deceit. Trying to hide his knowledge, he repurchases the earrings and gives them to Madame de... as a gift, hoping to test her honesty. She happily accepts them, oblivious to her husband's awareness.

Madame de... then uses the earrings to pay off more debts, but the jewelry finds its way into the hands of a jeweler who recognizes it as a gift from the General to his wife. The jeweler sells the earrings to Baron Donati, who, coincidentally, is Madame de...'s new lover. Donati presents the earrings to her, unaware of their significance.

As their affair intensifies, Madame de... becomes conflicted and decides to break it off with Donati, feeling guilt and shame over her actions. In an attempt to distance herself from him, she decides to sell the earrings again, but this time, she sells them to the jeweler who initially recognized them.

The jeweler then sells the earrings to the General's cousin, who gifts them back to Madame de... as a gesture of goodwill. She is shocked to receive them again, realizing that her secret affair may be at risk of exposure. In a desperate attempt to hide the truth, she lies to her husband, claiming she had recovered the earrings after mistakenly thinking she had lost them.

The dramatic climax occurs when the General, silently devastated by his wife's repeated dishonesty, announces that he has been appointed to a post in the Algerian War and intends to leave immediately. Realizing that her secret affair may soon be discovered, Madame de... becomes overwhelmed by guilt and asks Donati to leave her forever.

With their relationship ending and the truth hanging over them, tragedy strikes when Baron Donati perishes in a duel fought over Madame de... As she mourns his death, Madame de... falls seriously ill. In her last moments, she confesses her love for her husband, acknowledging the depth of her mistakes, and asks for his forgiveness.

The Earrings of Madame de... is a poignant tale of love, deceit, and the tragic consequences of tangled emotions. Through the recurring symbolism of the valuable earrings, the film explores the intricate web of relationships and the devastating impact of misunderstandings.
