In the movie Hot Shots!, the renegade pilot referred to in the synopsis is Topper Harley, a talented but disillusioned former Navy pilot. He is recruited by the Air Force to participate in a top-secret mission called Operation Sleepy Weasel, aimed at disabling a powerful Iraqi nuclear weapon.

However, upon arriving at the base, Topper quickly realizes that the operation is anything but straightforward. The squadron leader, Admiral Thomas "Tug" Benson, is portrayed as being quite incompetent and often makes questionable decisions. Despite his lack of aviation skills, Admiral Benson insists on joining the mission, causing concern among the crew.

As the mission progresses, Topper finds himself among a group of fellow pilots who are either inept or suffer from various disabilities. The comical and dysfunctional squadron includes a flyer who is blind in one eye, another who is deaf, and a third who is seemingly more interested in women than flying. Nonetheless, they all work together, albeit in an unconventional manner, to carry out their mission.

Throughout the film, Topper also deals with personal issues. He is haunted by the memory of his father, who was a legendary pilot but crashed his plane during a daring mission. This emotional baggage affects Topper's confidence and performance, and he must learn to overcome his fears and regain his focus.

As the climax of the movie approaches, the team faces numerous challenges and comedic mishaps, including a high-stakes aerial dogfight and navigating a treacherous enemy stronghold. Despite their initial limitations, the squad's unique talents and camaraderie prove essential in successfully completing the mission, ultimately saving the day.

In addition to the main plot, Hot Shots! includes numerous satirical references and parodies of other popular movies, especially Top Gun. The film combines over-the-top slapstick humor, visual gags, and witty one-liners to provide lighthearted entertainment for the audience.
