In the movie Le Trou, the story follows the four prison inmates: Gaspard Claude, Roland Darbant, Manu Borelli, and Monseigneur. They are serving sentences in La Santé Prison in Paris. The four have been planning an elaborate escape by digging a tunnel with a bed post for several months.

When Gaspard is transferred to their cell, the other prisoners decide to take a chance and reveal their escape plan to him. Initially skeptical, Gaspard eventually agrees to join their escape effort. Together, they begin digging a tunnel beneath their cell floor and into the complex sewage system.

The four inmates face various challenges and obstacles during their escape attempt. They must work discreetly, avoiding the suspicion of the guards and other inmates. They also have to maneuver through the intricate maze-like sewer network, which becomes increasingly complicated and dangerous.

As the days go by, tensions rise among the inmates, testing their friendship and loyalty. They must rely on each other's support and trust to overcome personal conflicts and maintain focus on their common goal of freedom.

Throughout the film, director Jacques Becker emphasizes the claustrophobic and suspenseful atmosphere of the underground tunnel and the complex dynamics among the inmates. The story is based on a true event, adding a sense of realism and tension to the plot.

However, just as the inmates are close to completing their escape tunnel, they encounter an unexpected setback. Their plan is jeopardized, leaving them uncertain about the success of their endeavor.

Le Trou explores themes of trust, friendship, and moral choices. The prisoners face dilemmas that challenge their principles and force them to confront the consequences of their actions. The film builds suspense as the inmates navigate the tight confines of the prison system and their own personal conflicts, culminating in a finale that keeps the audience on the edge of their seat.
