In Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted, Alex the lion, Marty the zebra, Melman the giraffe, and Gloria the hippopotamus find themselves stranded in Africa after the events of the second film. Determined to get back home to their beloved Central Park Zoo in New York City, they join a group of penguins and chimpanzees who have been living it up in Monte Carlo, Monaco.
However, their presence in Monte Carlo catches the attention of Capitaine Chantel DuBois, a relentless and determined French animal-control officer. DuBois, known for her skill in capturing wild animals, sets out on a relentless pursuit to capture Alex and his friends, wanting to add them to her collection of taxidermy trophies.
To escape DuBois and find a way back to New York, Alex and his friends disguise themselves as circus animals and join a struggling traveling circus they come across. The circus is led by Gia, a jaguar trapeze artist, and her circus troupe, including the strongman Vitaly, the shy sea lion Stefano, and the Italian tiger duo, Esmeralda and Esperanza.
As the circus travels through various European cities such as Rome, London, and Paris, Alex, Marty, Melman, and Gloria use their skills and talents to help revitalize the struggling circus show.
