In the movie A Love Song for Bobby Long, the headstrong young woman named Purslane "Pursy" Hominy Will returns to New Orleans after the death of her estranged mother, Lorraine. Pursy discovers that she has inherited her mother's decaying house, which she reluctantly decides to live in temporarily.

Upon arriving, Pursy finds the house occupied by two of her mother's former friends: Bobby Long, a once-promising literature professor, and his protégé, Lawson Pines. Both men are struggling alcoholics who have taken up residence in the house, turning it into a makeshift literary commune.

Initially, Pursy is frustrated by their presence and wants them to leave. However, as she spends more time with them, she learns about their tragic pasts and deeply buried regrets. Pursy slowly opens up to Bobby and Lawson, finding solace in their shared love for literature and music. They form an unconventional yet meaningful bond as they navigate through their personal struggles and begin to heal each other's emotional wounds.

As the story progresses, Pursy falls in love with a young musician named Lee, who also has a troubled past of his own. Lee encourages Pursy to pursue her dreams and move beyond the burden of her mother's death and the stagnant lifestyle she finds herself in.

Throughout the film, the characters grapple with themes of loss, forgiveness, and self-discovery. They find solace in literature, music, and their shared experiences, ultimately leading them towards redemption and a chance for a new beginning. Despite the ups and downs they encounter along the way, they discover the power of healing and the importance of moving forward in life.
