Cloud Atlas tells the interconnected stories of six different characters across different time periods and places.

The first story, set in the 19th century, follows Adam Ewing, a young American lawyer on a voyage across the Pacific Ocean. During his journey, he forms a bond with a stowaway slave named Autua. Their friendship challenges Ewing's beliefs about race and morality, ultimately leading him to question his role in the slave trade.

The second story is set in the 1930s and revolves around Robert Frobisher, a talented British composer. Frobisher becomes an apprentice to a renowned composer, Vyvyan Ayrs, but also embarks on a forbidden love affair with Ayrs' wife. As he composes his masterwork, the Cloud Atlas Sextet, Frobisher struggles with his own demons and desires.

The third story takes place in the 1970s and follows Luisa Rey, an investigative journalist. Rey uncovers a conspiracy involving a dangerous nuclear power plant, but her life is threatened as she gets closer to the truth. With the help of a man named Rufus Sixsmith, whom she had previously rescued from a suicide attempt, Rey tries to expose the corruption and save her own life.

In the fourth story, set in modern-day England, we meet Timothy Cavendish, an aging publisher who finds himself trapped in a nursing home against his will. Cavendish forms an unlikely friendship with fellow inmates as they hatch an escape plan. Amidst the chaos, Cavendish discovers a manuscript for a novel titled "Half-Lives: The First Luisa Rey Mystery," and he becomes infatuated with publishing it.

The fifth story is set in a dystopian future known as Neo Seoul, where a genetically-engineered clone named Sonmi-451 works as a server in a fast-food restaurant. However, Sonmi-451 eventually learns the truth about her existence and becomes involved in a rebellion against the oppressive society that created her.

The final story, set in a post-apocalyptic world, revolves around a tribesman named Zachry. Zachry lives on a remote island and encounters Meronym, a member of an advanced civilization called the Prescients. Meronym seeks Zachry's help in retrieving a communication device from a sacred location, causing Zachry to question his faith and confront the dark forces that threaten their world.

Throughout all of these stories, themes of power, oppression, love, and the interconnectedness of humanity are explored. As the film progresses, it becomes clear that each character's actions in one story can have a ripple effect across time, shaping the lives of others in different eras. Ultimately, the movie highlights the impact of individual choices and the potential for humanity to transcend boundaries and inspire change.
