In the movie Grandma, Elle Reid is a cantankerous and fiercely independent woman in her 70s. She is grieving the loss of her longtime partner, Violet, and has isolated herself from society due to her misanthropic tendencies. However, her carefully constructed bubble is shattered when her 18-year-old granddaughter, Sage, unexpectedly shows up at her doorstep seeking help.

Sage reveals that she is pregnant and needs money for an abortion, as she is unable to confide in her own mother due to their strained relationship. Elle, being low on cash herself, suggests that they spend the day searching for the money from various sources like old friends, ex-lovers, and even sleazy loan sharks.

Throughout their journey, Elle reconnects with people from her past, some of whom she has unresolved issues with. She confronts an old boyfriend, Karl, whom she helped put through law school but who cheated on her. Elle demands compensation for her investment, even resorting to breaking into his office to steal a valuable rare book. They also visit Elle's estranged daughter, Judy, who is hostile towards Elle but eventually offers to give them the money they need.

As they encounter different characters, Elle imparts her wisdom and tough love to Sage, urging her to take responsibility for her choices and not repeat the same mistakes she did in her own life. Elle's tough exterior gradually softens as she supports her granddaughter, realizing the importance of family and the need to be there for each other.

In the climax of the film, Elle and Sage arrive at an abortion clinic, where Elle discovers she has misplaced her ID. Faced with the possibility of Sage not being able to receive the procedure, Elle pleads with the clinic staff to make an exception. Ultimately, Sage is able to have the abortion, and the experience strengthens their bond.

As the day draws to a close, Elle and Sage return home, having confronted their respective pasts and futures. They have both learned valuable lessons about forgiveness, resilience, and the importance of unconditionally supporting loved ones. The movie ends with Elle holding a family portrait and reflecting on the significance of family connections.
